How I Got Here: A True Story

My mom and I share a lot of things. We have the same eyes and lips–when you see us in person, you KNOW we’re related. We both have sparkling personalities {ahem, tempers}. And, we both have a passion for creative pursuits.

My mom was my first creative business inspiration, and she’s a big part of why I do what I do.

Since, I’m launching a new program, Six Weeks to a Creative Business, and relaunching ARTrepreneur, I thought I’d share one of the big reasons I wound up where I am today.

Settle in with a handful of popcorn or a cup of tea {it’s really not that long}, and enjoy:

Has anyone inspired your passion for creating? I’d love to hear more about it in the comments below.

And, do you like today’s background? It’s a bunch of hanging ribbons!

My husband is very supportive of me, and my creative pursuits. Whenever he sees that I’m really into something, he will help me get the tools and materials needed… and he is always excited to see what I’ve created during the day… and well, anyway… he’s just really great at supporting me artistically.
Also, my Family and some of my friends are “Fans” of my work. =)
I think I was born an artist, though. And art is the ONE thing that I always go back to, and can’t “live without” for very long.

My husband is super supportive, too! I don’t know what I would do without his support. It’s so great that you have that!

That’s when you know you’ve found it–it’s something you can’t live without!

      • Phoebe January 24, 2012 at 8:55 am #

Yes, that’s right, I can’t live without my art. And I am so fortunate to have a husband to helps make it possible for me to pursue it. =)

Yay for supportive husbands–and finding something that you can’t live without!

Your mom sounds delightful as are you. The old adage is true that the apple does not fall far from the tree. I enjoy your videos AND your enthusiasm. In some ways you remind me of my own daughter whom I adore (and we have tiaras that we bring out on certain occasions so welcome to our world).

    • April January 19, 2012 at 2:22 pm #

Oh, too funny! Thanks for the warm welcome ;)

    Hello April,

Thanks for sharing your story with us! It’s amazing how our upbringing influences our adult lives… I also started making things because my mother has always knitted sweaters and baby clothes, made her own curtains, wrapped gifts creatively… Yay for super inspiring, dynamic mums!

(the ribbon background is genius, by the way!)

Great post. You are a delight. And you mom should get the tiara for being such a super supporter.

I have all brothers a husband AND all sons AND so far, all grandsons. Needless to say no one gets excited about what I do. Not a poor me moment because I get excited , , , enough for everyone. Not mind you that they are not supportive. Because they are. Look what my wife does or my mom will make that for the school she can do anything . . .

My husband asked me one day, why does Theresa (a friend) always say “OH MG!” when she looks at your stuff?

Thank goodness for the response of girl friends. So much different than the boy response. lol

    • April January 19, 2012 at 2:27 pm #

Thanks Debbie! She does deserve the tiara!

I’m so thankful, because my husband grew up in an artistic household. His mom was an illustrator at the local paper and then switched over to teaching art, so he gets excited about my creative projects. He doesn’t get bored with them–well, he does get bored when I drag him to a fabric store or a craft store…but that’s another story. :)

And, yes, thank goodness for girl friends!

Your mom is creative AND resourceful . yay for moms and their encouragement !
Hands down, my mother was my first source of encouragement. She didn’t create much, but when she saw I could, she created avenues & found resources + opportunities to help me push my own boundaries.
These days, its my hubby who is the wind beneath my wings.
Love the ribbon background + the tiara !

    Hi April,

I love this, it certainly explains your passion. I really love all of your tips, advice suggestions and free worksheets :) Sadly after just over a year fulltime in my business I am about to head back to paid employment as I am not earning enough yet from my creative business but I just realised an upside is that I will be able to afford to sign up for artrepreneur to keep me focused on my end goal of fulltime in my business again.

    • April January 19, 2012 at 2:30 pm #

I love how you’ve turned a negative into a positive! I’d love to work with you in ARTrepreneur!

There are a lot of creatives who have to work another job for the first couple years in order to put enough money into their businesses to get them off the ground. Sometimes, it’s the best {and only} move to make.

I come from a long line of crafters. My grandparents and my mom were my crafty roll models. Instead of flags, those concrete lawn geese were all the rage in our neighborhood. My mom would make all kinds of outfits and costumes for her goose :)

By the way, your tiara is very fetching ;)

    • April January 19, 2012 at 6:20 pm #

Yay! I love hearing about creative families. Concrete lawn geese–gotta love it!

      Thanks ;)

Hi April. Wonderful story, thank you for sharing it.

My husband is so super-supportive of me and all my “crazy” ideas. We’re actually having conversations right now about figuring out something we could do together.

    • April January 24, 2012 at 8:52 am #

It’s great when your significant other supports you! It would be incredibly hard for me if my husband didn’t support my “crazy” ideas!

I was surrounded by women who created beautiful things as a little girl. My grandma sewed amazing clothes, dolls and quilts and she was the one who taught me how to sew <3 My mom is an amazing seamstress and can crochet with her eyes shut. She sewed my sister and I so many beautiful things including prom gowns and matching Christmas outfits. The funny thing is that she doesn't think she is creative, but she is one of the most creative people I know :)

Now my mom is my thrift store and estate sale shopper. I just love getting photos of her latest finds via text LOL.

My hubby is super supportive. He does the dishes, vacuums and takes care of our little one when I'm cutting out piles of fabric, getting ready for a show or writing a blog post. He even stripped and painted some vintage shutters for my first craft booth last year. Without him none of this would be possible. Just to hear that he is proud of me is enough to keep me going on the rough days.

    • April February 8, 2012 at 9:44 am #

I love this Lynn. Thank you so much for sharing.

Your mom sounds incredibly creative and awesome. Isn’t funny how some super creative people don’t see how creative they really are?

Yay for supportive husbands! My husband also helped me with the setup of my craft booth–without him it would not have looked so good.
