How to Keep from Feeling like You Need a Vacation to Recover from the Holidays

My parents just pulled out of the driveway, and the tears are flowing.

I can’t help but get emotional anytime out-of-town family leaves, especially after a fun-filled holiday.

Even though I wish they were all still here, I’m taking some time to think about what I want next year to hold for me. I know that I create my own life—that every choice I make matters.

Do I stay glued to my computer all day or do I take breaks to walk my dogs and move my body? Do I waste thirty minutes browsing the web or do I spend that thirty minutes writing a blog post? Do I fuel my body with a banana or do I induce lethargy with a bag of chips?

Something I try to do every year around this time is spend time on me: taking a long bubble bath, reading a book by the fire, indulging in naps, and enjoying my Christmas presents. I make this a priority, especially during the week after Christmas, because I do so much to prepare for Christmas.

Because we hosted Christmas for our family this year, I spent most of the week prior to Christmas cleaning, decorating, and preparing recipes. Now, it’s time to relax, and that’s what I’m talking about in today’s video.

Please share one thing you’re going to do for yourself today {or tomorrow!} in the comments below.

As soon as I finish typing this, I’m going to shower and slather on a lemon cupcake body scrub I made for my family and myself for Christmas.

I get two weeks off from my day job over Christmas – woo woo! And of course I came home with a to do list a mile long that would probably fill 2 months of my time – and here I am trying to fit it all in in two weeks. And if I just laze about watching a DVD or having an afternoon nap, I feel like I am wasting time or not making the most of the time I have.

So, am going to try and go with the flow a bit more. Just do the things on my list when I feel like it (if I feel like it) and just see what comes along. Think I might have a big year in 2013, so I need to recharge and be ready.

I hope you had a beautiful Christmas with your family. Maybe you could share your dog bikkie recipe with us?

My husband has a this week off and my daughter is out from school so one thing I did is deactivate my personal Facebook account so I would be fully present without the urge to check it. Also something I bought for myself for christmas is the book Turning pro so I’m going to sit by the fireplace and read it peacefully :) Merry Chrirtmas and Happy New Year!

The holiday season actually lasts until January 6th here in Italy and although there’s a bit of a break in between, the days fly by so fast in preparation for family festivities and food menus… it’s pretty crazy. I love soaking in the family time and feeling the warm and coziness of the holiday season in general, but I agree that we have to remember to take care of ourselves. Event stopping for a moment to take it all in! I’m definitely taking a few days to think about my own space and how I want to ring in the New Year!

For me this was the first christams lunch whit the family in our house, and I was the cook. So, was a little bit stressfull… fortunately all went right and I’ve not burned nothing.
After the lunch we went on the mountains and now I feel tired but I can stay on the sofà with a blanket and my dog… Thinking about take some lessons from April next year, of she is planning to offer some. April, are you planning?

I love that you’re giving us permission to take care of ourselves- I’ll take it! It’s been pretty cold and snowy here in Ohio so I’ll be warming up with hot beverages next to our fireplace with my new kindle- such a treat!

Happy New Year, April! I so enjoy your blog and look forward to taking your blogging course in the new year!

Fortunately for me, the holidays weren’t as stressful for me this year. ..I am paying more attention to my health and have spent the last few days finding inspiration via social media to keep up with during the year. I went to the gym yesterday and spent more time than usual to get a really good work out in and to learn new routines. Going to continue to focus on that until I form a good habit for 2013!
Wishing you all a HEALTHY & Happy New Year!

I have a very minimal holiday season now. I don’t go out much, have a very short gift list and don’t buy anything at a big box. I hit up one or two craft fairs, make a few cards/tags using what I like to thing of as my one trick pony method (this year it was origami trees) and I stay at home with my immediate family on the holidays watching movies.

Work is a very busy time for me in Dec/Jan because it’s year end and I’m a financial controller for a public company so having a mellow low key holiday is a necessity.

I do like the idea of pampering too and will likely go to the spa in mid January.

Cupcake slather sounds pretty good too :-)
