If you’re that entrepreneur telling yourself that if you could only get to know your ideal customer better your lonely PayPal account would finally see some growth, then today’s video is for you.
If you don’t invest time in learning about your ideal customer you’re going to struggle with:
1) writing sales copy that resonates with her
2) brainstorming blog content that she can’t wait to devour over her morning muffin and chai tea latte
3) using social media to attract the type of person who will click on your links, sign up for your email newsletter and eventually become a customer.
I’m not going to lie and tell you that this is a shortcut to learning everything you’ll ever need to know about your ideal customers. But, if you’re terrified of talking to your ideal customers in person or via Google Hangouts, this will get you started.
If you’ve already chatted with a handful of your ideal customers, this will give you a new perspective. Either way, it’ll help your business.
If you’ve been struggling with this whole ‘ideal customer’ thing, please let me know if this video helped you in the comments below. Thanks for watching!
If this video got your buns toasting and you want more, I go through two creative activities that I haven’t shared anywhere else (and a lot more) that’ll help you break down those ideal customer walls in my latest CreativeLive course, Double Your Followers with Creative Marketing.
“I’ve listened to other Creative Live courses and even bought a few of them, but this is by far the best I’ve experienced so far! As a visual artist and jewelry designer, I love the visuals in every presentation and April’s delivery of information is so pleasant that it feels like I am in the live audience even though I’m usually listening to the rebroadcasts late in the evening or on the weekends. I don’t buy often, but just an hour ago, I hit the buy button because this is a course I will want to revisit often as I build my own creative business. And, of course, I didn’t want to miss out on any of those great bonus materials!” -Charmaine

I’m a Pinterest addict, and I’ve never thought of using Pinterest in that way to get to know my ideal customers. That tip is invaluable!
P.S. Anytime you mention a book (fiction or non-fiction) I immediately put it on my wish list.
Also…yes please to some behind-the-scenes of your studio space!
This was great, April (and not just because I’m the example!).
YAY! Glad to give you another way to use Pinterest. 🙂
P.S. You should add The Lunar Chronicles (that start with Cinder by Marissa Meyer) to your to be read list if you haven’t already read it. I’ve finished the first three books and I can’t wait to read the last one.
Adding it to my list now. 😀
And I second the Lunar Chronicles recommendation…
Those are such good reads! Glad I’m not the only adult that enjoys YA 🙂
So famous!!!! Hehehehe I’m all like “Heeeeeeey I KNOW HER!!!!”
Hi, April!
I found my ideal customer and then she became my bestie and now we are partners in a new biz we’ll be launching in the spring! I’m so excited! ♡
xoxoxo
This video is such a great addition to the DYFWCM class. Thank you April for expanding this topic that I struggle with.
Dear April, thank you very much for this video. I think it is a great tip. Especially for introverts like me. Or if you are just starting out (again just like me 🙂 I will never forget what you have said about the ideal customer, “what does she lie to herself about?” and “what does she think when she is awake at 3 pm?” These were quite striking questions. Have a good daaay and thank you again 🙂
Watching this video was a great way to start my morning! It clued me in on so many things I’m not picking up on when I look at what people post. Since watching DYFWCM on Creative Live, I’ve finally got my website updated, started a mailing list, added the first written post to my blog in over a year and have a schedule for regular posts. (My website is for art, so I’ve neglected other things.) Now I feel ready to get into the nitty gritty of what you’re talking about here. Thanks for all your inspiration! (You even inspired me to pay my first visit to my local Anthropologie store, where I fell in love with a wonderful planner to add to my motley collection.)
Excellent Video and Advice! LOVE! Thanks, April, for always making the big stuff seem so attainable. As I work to grow my business and add products/programs, doing this kind of “market research” feels more realistic than crunching numbers and making graphs. 🙂 And who doesn’t like another reason to spend time on Pinterest! 😀
Such great tips! This was a little nice push to get back into developing my ideal customer, which I did during the double your followers creative live session. I let it fall to the wayside after but really need to go back and fine tune and discover more about my peeps.
What struck me too while watching the video is you can find the platform your ideal uses the most so you’ll narrow down the socialmedia you need to be on. Another common thread I can definitely use.
Thank you for posting this. There are great tips in here, not just about finding out about your ideal customer, but about what to do with the information once you have it.
Great ideas!!! Thanks! Can’t wait to dive into this myself! And noting the above book recommendation, too. 🙂
Loved this video April! Is there a way to find out your customer’s interests on Facebook? I thought you mentioned before that there was a way to look up people who like your page and then it gave you insights like: gardening or cooking, etc… ?
I love this post, April! I’m working on my Ideal Customer Avatar in B-School, so this will certainly help. I love these suggestions and will definitely use them!!
More top-grade info, April! Can’t wait to start the research!
That insthgi’s just what I’ve been looking for. Thanks!
Very helpful, April. I have always struggled with identifying my ideal customer. Am starting with my Ideal Customer notebook now. Exciting and fun! Thank you!
