How Everyday Decisions Influence Your Success

- September 23, 2010 | by April -

So, here’s the thing. I was gonna write a kickass post on how the everyday choices you make determine whether or not you reach your goals. I was going to give you advice on how to reach your goals, and why saying, “I can’t do _____” is your way of saying, “I don’t want to do what it takes to _____.”

But, then I read Johnny B. Truant’s latest post: Choose to be outstanding (or choose to continue to suck) and realized that he basically said everything that I was going to say—maybe a little harsher than I would put it—but the idea is the exact same. So, instead of rewriting what he wrote, I’m going to send you his way to read why your choices determine your success. Once you’re finished, come back here, for a few additional thoughts.

Go on—I’ll wait!

Your Choices Today Determine Your Successes Tomorrow

Revisit your business goals. Do you make choices each day to reach those goals or do you make choices that take you further away from those goals?

During a consulting session that I had with Srini from BlogcastFM and The Skool of Life, he encouraged me to put together a blog series. As soon as we ended our session, I thought about the work that would have to go into a blog series that included 8 other women who live all over the world—and decided it would be worth it. I know that if I want to make this blog successful and reach my business goals, I have to put in some sweat.

I worked almost all of last weekend—with the exception of the Virginia Tech football game {Go Hokies!}—to get ready for the social media blog series that I’m hosting. I had to send out a bunch of emails, finish the introduction post, and write the third post in the series. I also needed to tape two more videos for this week with my mother-in-law. On Sunday, I worked about 12 hours—even though I really wanted to curl up with a good book.

And, the experience alone has been awesome. The women I’ve met along the way are incredibly talented and it’s been so much fun to work with them {and I hope I get to work with them again!}. I’ve also grown my subscriber count and email newsletter list. In the past week, I’ve been able to reach two goals: connect with other women in the handmade movement and increase my readership.

If I’d have whined, “A blog series would help me reach my goals, but it’s too much work,” I’d have missed out on a great opportunity.

Make Conscious Decisions

It’s alright if you decide something would be too much work, and you don’t want to give up x, y, and z to get it. But, you NEED to make think about the decisions you make instead of complaining that you can’t do things.

If you want to design a new line of jewelry or stock your online store before the holiday rush, but you just can’t find the time, figure out where you waste time? If you stopped watching television for two weeks, worked instead of having a glass of wine after dinner, or got up an hour earlier to work, would you reach your goals?

It’s all up to whether you really want it or not. What’s your decision?
