Learn from Others Who’ve Done What You Want to Do

- March 30, 2011 | by April -

Want to know one of the easiest ways to increase your creative business success?

Learn from the people who’ve done what you want to do.

You can do this one of two ways: 1. Study their businesses or 2. Talk to them and ask them questions about how they did it.

The first is easier to make happen–but it takes longer. You have to pay close attention and really study how that person has built his business. And, I happened to put together a worksheet that’ll make this process a little easier on you. You can download it here. {you must have Adobe reader to download}

Let me be clear. This isn’t about copying anyone’s work. Instead, it’s about using the same processes and techniques instead of reinventing the wheel. For instance, you might study someone’s business and realize that she keeps her target market engaged by sending them email newsletters each week. Then, you might engage your target market by sending email newsletters once a week. You’re not copying her product–you’re using her techniques.

Let’s say you want to take the shorter path by getting those people to tell you how they’ve done it. It can be hard to track those people down and get them to spill their secrets–unless you’re willing to pay for coaching or consulting. That’s where I come in.

I’ve done this hard work for you {and I’m gonna keep doing each month} in ARTrepreneur. If you haven’t checked it out, you can see all the details here. And, if you’re interested, you’ll be able to join on Monday, April 4th!

    Hi April! 🙂

    Oooh, yes, learning from others is certainly a much FASTER way to get to where we want to go. I’ve been in a coaching program over the last year and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today with my business without the training and coaching I received through that. Learning from Marie Forleo and Lisa Wilder helped me to really boost my business and leap forward to another level.

    It’s been so powerful for me that I want to make sure I am ALWAYS in some kind of training and coaching program, so I can continue to leap forward. 🙂

      I’m big on coaching programs, too! Laura Roeder’s creating fame program was AMAZING for me…and then attending Rich, Hapy, and Hot Live with Marie Forleo was one of the best experiences. I think it’s so important to have mentors–it makes such a huge difference.

    April, I am blown away by the resources in the ARTrepreneur site; I just told my etsy teammates about it I am so impressed.

    A local quilt shop owner is very friendly and willing to talk about her start in creating handmade products to finally opening her own store. Her daughter even sells on esty with sales in the thousands. As a former teacher I believe we learn best through experience and what better way to be guided than through the experience of others.

    I love your worksheets!

      Thanks Erika! *Blush*

      I love when I find people who are willing to talk about their business tips, successes, and regrets. You can learn so much from them.

    This looks like a great program! Am excited to check it out in more detail. It kind of reminds me of going the “American Idol” route – learn from experts and get coaching vs. just watching from the sidelines, trying to guess at what will work.

    Many thanks for sharing those tips. I will be downloadiing the sheet after reading this. It would also be interestig to know just how many small busineses send out email newsletters and if they find they help.at all. I use most of the social media networking pages but have yet to find out if they actually help.
