Little Touches That’ll Make Your Etsy Shop Shine

- March 2, 2011 | by April -

Standing out on Etsy is no easy feat.

In my opinion, it’s the little things that will make your shop shine brighter than the others in your niche.

I’m going to use my friend, Mayi Carles’ shop, as an example to show you some little touches you can add to your own shop to make it stand out. Why Mayi? Well, she knows how to sell and she rocks. {Click on any of the photographs to get more info or purchase the products below}

1. Photograph your items on a background that features your product as the star.

Mayi uses this gray background for most of her pictures, and it makes the colors of her products pop. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a busy background that will only take away from your products. I see many sellers use patterned backgrounds and props in a way that still allows the product to be the star—and that should always be your goal.

2. Add a tag to make the product look more professional.

I love the little tags that Mayi stitches onto her products. If you sell jewelry or other small items, this might not be feasible. But, if you can add this touch, it definitely adds another layer of professionalism.

Also, adding tags to your products will help your customer remember where they got it. Remember, we’re all busy and we forget things. If someone is wearing one of her adorable headbands and a friend admires it, she can easily tell her where she can get one by glancing at the tag.

3. Add a little something that your target market will love.

Mayi knows her target market well. It’s obvious from the little added touch of the heart on the backs of many of her products. That extra girly and romantic touch makes her target market want her products even more.

First, you’ve got to know who your target market is, and then you can brainstorm things that might make the product even more appealing to your target market. For example, if you sell whimsical jewelry, you could show a picture of the whimsical, hand-stamped boxes that you use to ship your jewelry.

4. Show the size of your product by photographing it on or near something that’s familiar to your customers.

It’s hard to know how big something is just from the dimensions, so your customers might feel more comfortable purchasing if you photograph your items in way that gives them a better understanding of the size.

Mayi photographs many of her products in her hand which is an easy way to show her customers the size of her hair accessories.

5. Give your packaging a “wow” factor.

I adore this sweet little hand-stamped bag that Mayi shows in this picture.

You could tie up your jewelry boxes with baker’s twine, add a custom stamp to the packaging you already use, make your packages pop with a bright ribbon, or add a customized sticker with your logo to your packages.

The first thing that your customer sees when your product arrives is the packaging, so make that first impression really good and you’ll have more repeat customers.

I love these little tips. They not only make a professional presentation, but give your customer information on where to find you if they want to share your product with friends and family in the future.
