How to Make More Time for Your Important Work

- November 9, 2011 | by April -

I don’t know if you know this about me, but I’m a girly girl.

I could spend an entire day shopping in Sephora, growing up I had a completely pink room, and I have a weakness for sparkly jewelry.

But, I’m also pretty tough. My husband would probably tell you that I’m not the kind of person you want to mess with. When it comes to people, I have no problem speaking my mind and standing up for myself. However, when it comes to spiders, I have a hard time keeping my cool.

What I’m about to show you will only add to the girly girl factor and take away from the tough factor. I’m good with that. Brace yourself for a loud scream around the 2:06 mark and then press play.

Want a recap of the video?

First, how fun is that background that I made for this video? Do you dig it?

Okay, now for the actual content. To make more time for your important work that will bring you closer to your professional goals, you need to take something that you’re currently doing that isn’t getting you any closer and ignore it, minimize it, or outsource it.

You want your work day to consist of mostly high leverage tasks that are getting you closer to your professional goal, and the only way to make this happen is to get rid of some of the other tasks. Again, you have three options in doing this: ignore it, minimize it, or outsource it.

If you want more help on making time for your important work and increasing productivity, check out RoadMap: Sparking Your Productivity to Get You There. Registration closes November 28th.

perfect advice ! I can think of at least one thing for sure that can be eliminated from my routine. It’ll help to focus for sure. Well, and as for your performance at the end, I totally relate to it. I get all freaked about spiders too ! Its spider season here in australia …eeks…
Love the background ! Love love love…! So fun ..

Thanks! I’ve decided that I’m going to change up the background of the videos each week 🙂 It’s been fun coming up with different ideas!

    GREAT advice!

And btw, it probably was a Brown Recluse. I’m convinced all spiders are either Brown Recluses or Black Widows.

Hahahahaha…me, too! I always think it’s a spider that’s gonna bite and poison me!

You are so adorable! Oh, and thanks for the advice. E-mail was my distraction too. I also try to check it 2-3 times a day, morning, lunch and end of day. Works out so much better that way.

Hahahaha. You just made me feel way better about my bug phobia. I’m such a sissy when it comes to bugs of any sort.

Only one? I am the queen of distraction; if I can find something to keep me from doing work, I will! I waste an extraordinary amount of time on Facebook each day, leaving it open from the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed. It’s terrible, and I no doubt could get a lot more done if I’d just stay off the computer for a bit.

I’m glad I could make you feel way better 🙂

I urge you to stay off of Facebook tomorrow. Just pop on during breaks and see if it improves your productivity! Do it!

Oh my gosh, tomorrow’s my birthday! That’s the best Facebook day of the year! 😛 But, alright. I’m willing to take on your challenge. No Facebook while I should be working!

    Yay! More bloopers 🙂

I’m going to start applying this advice right now. It’ll be like a mantra: “ignore it. minimize it. or outsource it.” I’ll add it to Mayi’s latest advice on “touch it once”. That is also helping me tons. I’m hoping to be a cured creative procrastinator very soon 🙂 I think your December class is right up my alley. I hope I can sign-up for it. Will this class be a one-time deal or will you be offering it again?

    Take care!

P.S. thanks for the tip on the chickpea cutlets. Sooooo making them tomorrow!

Hey Tabassum! Yes, make it mantra! And, Mayi’s advice to touch it once is also really good advice to stop the procrastination 🙂 I hope I see you in RoadMap–I will probably offer it again next year. I’m going to see how this first round goes and then decide from there. But, I’ll probably offer it again. Let me know how the chickpea cutlets turn out!

Hey Di that’s awesome! It just depends on your size and activity level. For example I consider myself to be a medium and fairly active female so I consume about 12 blocks per day. You can start there or have a few more or less depending on your own habits and adjust them as you go if needed!
