How to Figure Out What People Are Willing to Pay For

- February 8, 2012 | by April -

I’m a hopeless romantic. I enjoy romantic comedies, date nights with my husband, weddings, and Rascal Flatts. Right before I walked down the aisle to marry my husband, a friend of the family sang the song, Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts.

So, you might guess that I’m a fan of Valentines’ Day, and you’d be right. That’s another reason that today’s video background is my favorite so far.

I was caught off guard at the end of this video–as you’ll see if you watch it–because my husband didn’t know what day Valentine’s Day is in February. What?!?! I need to know if the men in your life know what day Valentine’s Day is or if they have to look it up each year. Share in the comments below.

This week’s video topic came from Rachael {@kitchencourses on Twitter}. She asked if I’d talk about membership sites and how to figure out what people are willing to pay for when it comes to membership sites. You can take this information and apply it to other products and services as well.

After you watch the video above, you might want to check out this free module on getting to know your target market.

If you liked this week’s video, please share it:

No, my hubby does not know the date unless I tell him. He usually gets me flowers, but that’s because I remind him that its coming 🙂

    Awesome background! Love it!
James guessed Feb. 22. I guess that’s why he is always late on the Valentines gift and here I thought he was just waiting till they reduced the prices. Wow! Thanks for making me poll. It was very enlighting.

I asked my partner this week if he wanted to have dinner at a restaurant for Valentine’s Day this year and his reply was “When’s that?”… 🙂

I also wanted to say that I love how you change background for every video you make and how entertaining I find the entertainment section at the end of your videos to be. They often make me giggle.

Your hubby is right…and I would love to hear more from him. Such a nice voice! I have been married for 31 years. We moved in together on Valentines Day back in college… how positively scandalous and romantic ! SO I think he only remembers it because it was such a big deal with all my college room mates. Guys are wired different – trainable – but different.

As usual, I love your background. I too enjoy “Chick Flicks” and romance. …. My husband knows what day Valentine’s day is…. We rarely do anything “Special” for it, though. Mostly because He doesn’t like doing something on a specific “commercial” day… but … he does sweet, romantic and wonderful things for me, year round. SO it’s ok. =)

Hahahahahahahaha! David says: “Hi Kris”. He knows when Valentines Day is, but I think it’s just cuz he I’m announcing it since New Years. Does that count? Know that I say it out loud, I feel it’s a little bit like cheating! 🙁 LOL

Anyhoo, great information about membership sites. Something that really helped me “survey” my prospects (cuz I really don’t have the Umpa Lumpa power to go all by-the-book-scientific at the moment) was pro-actively asking my new e-mail subscribers: What’s your biggest barrier to success + how does it make your feel”. Full credits to Derek Halpern for that nugget of wisdom.

Listening, JUST LIKE YOU SAID is surely the way to go. AND it’s not as hard as we sometimes complicate it in our heads 🙂

Too funny! That kinda counts 😉

Yes! Ask your subscribers about their biggest barriers–great tip!

I think you’re right. We do complicate it more than we need to. If you listen closely, you’ll figure it out.

The only reason my husband knows what day Valentines day is – is because we were married on that day. And like your husband at the beginning of the month he looks on a calendar and checks to see what ‘day’ it’s going to land on. He was a little jumpy yesterday ‘Tuesday’, but now he knows it’s this coming Tuesday. I think that’s just how their brains work.

Great video & advice. And no, my husband doesn’t have a clue. He also doesn’t know what day Christmas or my birthday falls on. And he still doesn’t realize that Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. Sheesh! Men! But if I’m going to male bash, I should probably admit that neither of us knows how long we’ve been married. We can’t remember what year it was & all of our documentation floated away in a flood. Our oldest is 17, but had we been married 2 or 3 years before he was born?? We do know our anniversary date though – 2 days after his birthday. Hard to forget that one. 🙂

    Love the background!

My husband is actually more likely to remember important dates than I am…he wished me happy 3rd anniversary of our first date yesterday–something I would NOT have remembered!

Your information about target markets is so helpful. But my question is, how do you get them to respond to you? Is it different when you’re a product-based business? Sometimes it feels a bit difficult to have a dialogue with a customer when all they’re interested is how fast I’m going to ship their hair clip to them!

Wow! That’s impressive and so romantic.

You could always send out a short survey {something that will take 3-5 minutes to fill out} after you know the customer has received your product and get their feedback. You won’t get a response from all of your customers, but you will get responses from some of them.

Great stuff, April! Thanks so much for taking my question and giving some examples. I think I finally understand what you mean about using what your market says to figure out if they’ll pay for something and your example of a course vs a weekly option for making healthy meals taste better really makes sense! I’ll have to put on my detective hat and start doing some investigating!

Also, I don’t think my husband necessarily knows what day Valentine’s Day is, but I always seem to talk about it before it happens, so he’s usually off the hook. 😉 The background is super cute in this video – maybe it should make a repeat performance!!

    Thanks again! You’re awesome!

Awesome Rachael! I’m glad those examples helped you out.

I just figured my husband knew when it was, because he’s never missed it and we’ve been together over eight years. It’s funny to know that he looks it up every year.

You’re welcome! And, you’re pretty awesome, too!

I haven’t given my husband the opportunity to forget what day it is. But I know that he has a hard time with dates, like my birthday is in “that month before August”… takes him awhile to remember.

My brother in law asked my sister to marry him on Feb 13th! I’m sure this was a ploy to remember Valentines Day – he always buys her a card, the day before.

Uhm, each guy I asked knew what day VD is. It’s on the 14th every year. It doesn’t move around like Thanksgiving or Easter.

On the busy want to cook healthy example — I think that healthy crock pot recipes would solve that problem and be super easy! 😉

    Thanks, April!

But my guy is sorta in the middle. He knows when Valentine’s day is ..phew ! he’s not overly the romantic kind, but does well – for a guy , anyway!

Even w/all of the commerical hype, my man still doesn’t know when Valentine’s day is or any other important dates for that matter. Buuuut thankfully, he’s thoughtful all year around, so he’s off the hook 😉

Since I’m a product based company, I’ve been trying to get my fans/customers to tell me what they’re looking for right now that they can’t seem to find anywhere else, etc, etc. But I still haven’t gotten a response after a few tries. Maybe my approach is off?
