Why the "But I'm Not a Good Writer" Excuse Sucks + A Lesson in Rap

- June 13, 2012 | by April -

Writing Excuses

IΒ can’t blog. I’m not a good writer.

If you’re still using this excuse for why you’re not blogging, then we need to have a serious talk.

Imagine me wearing my glasses with my hair pulled up in a tight bun, waving a ruler while you read the rest of this.

I get it. Writing isn’t easy–it’s a skill just like anything else. You have to practice to get better.

Now, here’s why it’s critical that you get better at writing. It’s not because you need to have an awesome blog that attracts your ideal customers, even though that’s a fantastic goal to have.

It’s because YOU write your copy: product titles, product descriptions, sales pages, email newsletters, etc.

Unless you’ve hired this out, you don’t have another option. You need to improve your writing to improve the overall success of your business. Want more sales? Improve that copy.

Lucky for you, you’re super smart and are reading this blog {Go you! Treat yourself to a mocha latte for that intelligent move.}, and I’m dishing on the two SIMPLE ways to improve your writing in today’s video. And, my husband gives us a lesson in rap for entertainment time!

If you want more resources on improving your writing, check out:

1. Blogging for Your Creative Business {This course includes a bonus, 365 Writing and Blogging Prompts, that will help you transform your writing.}

2. On Writing by Stephen King

3. Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

4. Copyblogger

5. Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg

P.S. The contest to win a scholarship for Blogging for Your Creative Business ends tomorrow night at 9pm EST.

    LOVE your background! πŸ™‚

And you are so right about reading and writing all the time. I love both – but to be honest often somehow other things take over. So I am going to schedule time to read and write each day – right now. πŸ™‚

Thanks! I found those little wood birdhouses in the dollar bins at Michael’s and I painted them fun colors.

      Awesome!

Loved the bird houses πŸ™‚ You are so right about reading & writing.. LIke anything, it comes with practice . I always tell friends who ask how to improve on their artistic abilities to practice sketching/ painting just 15 minutes a day. All of that sparks the creativity – sure the result may not always be perfect everytime, but it definitely improves over time.

No, I don’t know who bird man is…hehehe! I really agree with you about including writing in your blog even if you use video. It’s super important to use great titles too! Great titles guarantee that someone will click + I agree with lakshmi I LOVE the birdhouses too!

      Hahahahaha!

Yep, titles make a big difference. I love experimenting with titles to figure out what works and what doesn’t.

That is awesome that your husband knows who Lil Wayne is. πŸ™‚ My husband took our kids (12 & 16) to see him in concert. That would be my worst nightmare. LOL
Good tips today. I look forward to your post every Wednesday.

Great advice, yet again April, thank you. I am very looking forward to Blogging for your Creative Business and love the writing prompts so far – way to keep me busy and writing for the next year. I am looking forward to looking back on my “writing prompts” journal and seeing my progress and improvement.
Thanks. Oh, and super cute birdhouses, love them.

Yay! I’m so glad. Looking back over your writing for a year and seeing how you’ve improved is so much fun. It’s also fun to go back through and reread some of your answers, because it transports you back in time. πŸ™‚

I read Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

One of my work friends gave me a great gift at my baby shower. It was a book called Mom’s One Line A Day: A Five Year Memory Book. The idea is to write one line / one memory / one thought about each day for five years. Each day of the year has its own page, so you can see what you were doing or thinking on that same day every year. This book has helped with my writing in many ways. It gets me to write *something* every single day, makes me work on being concise (very limited writing space!), and gives me the opportunity to reflect. You could use this idea for non-mommy-related writing too. πŸ™‚

This is what I needed to here today. Last night I was having a crisis of confidence, and this was a good reminder for me to just keep at it! I don’t think I’m a particularly good writer, but I’ve somehow found myself being a Reviews Editor for a website and writing lots of book reviews. Someone clearly has some faith in me that’s for sure, so I’m just going to keep on doing it until I improve!

I have no idea about rap music, give me rock any day! πŸ˜‰

That sounds really fun, and someone does have faith in you! Even some of the best writers lacked confidence, but they kept on going.
