Your Guide to Pricing Information Products with Moxie and Confidence

- October 3, 2012 | by April -

I adore autumn—patterned tights, apple cider, a fire blazing in the wood burning stove, and of course, college football.

Another thing happening in the fall is the release of lots of information products—digital guides, online courses, beautiful planners, and charming downloadables.

The beginning of the school year inspires learning and transformation. And, savvy entrepreneurs launch their products before the holidays take over and everyone is swept away by festivities, eggnog, and holiday shopping.

If you’re one of these entrepreneurs launching an information product soon, you’re probably sweating over the PRICE. Don’t let this step torture you. {My advice: Don’t do it sober…just kidding…kinda…}

Today’s video covers the twelve things to consider when mulling over price.

Now, it’s your turn. Please share any tips you have on pricing information products in the comments below.

I love it that your dog wanted to dance with you! I think Pajama April should be your new alter ego.

I’m working on an information product right now and I’ve been going back and forth about the price. Your tip about higher prices bringing in more dedicated customers really resonated with me. I have some larger coaching programs that are expensive ($1000+), but who’s going to believe I’m worth it if I sell an info product for $20? I’m finally getting to the point where I’m thinking, “I put a crapload of time and effort into this and it’s crazy valuable, and I’m worth it!”

Love your videos. You remind me to have fun with my business. 🙂

One of our dogs always wants to be involved with whatever we’re doing! He’s a troublemaker.

Yay!!! Good luck with your new product!

OMGosh! I love that idea Sage! You should so do pajama April in some videos. That would be too funny… especially if she had too much wine! LOL!

As usual, awesome video. Great tips.

The thing that stuck out to me the most was looks, and not only the cover design of the product, but the sales page too. It’s definitely worth spending a little time and money on that because it really does help tie in your brand and relay the sense of value that the product has. Thanks April!

Yes…the look of the sales page can definitely impact your customers’ perceptions. It’s worth it to spend time on it.

I’ve been reading a lot about pricing lately and this was really great. One of the things I really need to remember is that: things can change!

Generally, I tell people to think of the price they think they should charge and then double it. That tends to be about right.

I’ve also been working on thinking about value in terms how much time or money you will save your customer or how much additional money you’ll make them. If you look at Mayi’s new digital guide, she says you could make an extra $75,000 so the $57 price point seems SO worth it. It’s a great thing to have thought about to pull out if people question the price.

My favourite background ever – sooo gorgeous!

I love this video – another one that is like a mini class. So many great ideas. I’ve bought a few courses and books and guides. As you were talking, I was thinking of my experiences with each of them. Price, amount of information, how pretty they were.

I also have the idea of doing my own ‘digital guide’ one day – that item on my to-do list is still a way off yet though. I will be bookmarking this video to watch for when the time comes. I know it will make a big difference to if it is a success or failure.

Great video April! I love what you said about over delivering. The thing I’ve noticed recently is that a lot of ‘gurus’ seem to come up with abracadabra prices. In their minds they feel something is worth a certain amount but totally neglect the value of their product from a customer/clients view point. I think it’s so key to think like your customer and price based on the value that you’re giving them. I’m a big believer in way over-delivering so that customers come back again and again and again because they feel they’ve received their money’s worth and love what you provide. Also, whilst appearance or visuals do matter because they help products to sell, I think the quality of content, information and advice matters more.

Oh yes! Couldn’t agree more–the quality of the content and information definitely matters. That’s a given. If you’re selling crap, you’ll never make it.

    Thank you so much April!

I was just revisiting a digital/tutorial business idea yesterday after watching Marie Forlio’s most recent video. I’d shelved it in the back of my mind because I thought it was going to be too hard to compete in the market but now I know there is definitely a place for me and my products. I can’t believe how timely your video is!

The idea of thinking about how much your informtaion is worth to the customer and what value it will bring them when pricing your products is genius. So many creative business owners just don’t price properly and this has really put me off trying to compete with them in the past.

Now I see that my ideal customers are not their ideal customers ;0)

I already have loads of ideas on how i can over deliver too!

    A million thank you’s!

    Sarah

That’s sooooo exciting, Sarah! Go for it.

I got an email from a friend concerned that her product was too similar to a competitors who released it one day before her launch. Sometimes, you just can’t think about that!

    Hey April,

You are so right about over delivering and whole lotta other things. A lot of your advice applies to physical products and services too . and Im really glad I can take it and apply it to what pertains to me. . I have purchased some digital guides and I have to say – most of them live up to their expectations and some even beyond . That’s over delivering .. and its awesome, because now these people have me as a repeat customer. Thanks , April !

Love PJ April and your dog is adorable !!

Well, just so you know, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the background! So whatever it’s worth, both you AND your husband did a wonderful job putting some time into it:) Great points about pricing…I always look back at how much I’ve grown as a Designer when it comes to pricing and how much value I deliver to my clients. I could laugh about it now, but sometimes I can’t believe how much I *used to* charge when I first started my business — not enough! Thanks for sharing your insights, and you might want to cut back on the cranberry! LOL.
