A Copywriting Challenge for You

- March 13, 2013 | by April -

One thing I’ve noticed working with creative entrepreneurs is that they don’t tend to like writing sales copy.

Therefore, their copy is lackluster and could use a boost of energy and excitement. If you can’t write compelling copy that engages your ideal customer, your business will suffer. That’s why I’ve got a copywriting challenge for you today.

I know you might be thinking, “Nooooooooooooo. Nooooo. Noooooooo copywriting. I despise it. I’d rather wear a bikini to my high school reunion than work on writing.”

Before you click out of this window, watch the video. Then decide, but I promise you that if you work on your sales copy, your business will be better off for it.

If you want more help with your copy, check out my 365 Writing and Blogging Prompts Delivered Directly to Your Inbox. Copywriting help, tips and exercises are sprinkled throughout.

Love it! I do think I need to work on my “copy” (fancy shmancy word). I’d love to see some good examples. (ps.: I like lavender, and I’m not a grandma!)

I know…I like lavender, too! It’s my favorite scent. My husband just doesn’t get girly things sometimes. 🙂

I would start a swipe file on your computer and anytime you run across a product description or sales page that makes you say, “I gotta have this now!” add it to the folder. That way you have lots of examples when you want to read good copy. But, that’s also a good idea for a blog post here…might just tackle that one.

I am just about to spend today jazzing up my product descriptions, so this video came at the perfect time! I don’t know why I have such a hard time with this–I have found my blogging voice, but I don’t feel like my sales voice matches it at all. Hopefully stepping into my idea customer’s shoes will help!

It will help! I promise. Another tip: just write it all out without editing at first. This is what I do so I don’t sit there and think, “Well, that’s just stupid,” or “No…that doesn’t work.” I go back and edit in rounds. Usually over a course of a few days, so I can look at it with fresh eyes.

Get out of my head, April! 🙂 Haha, you are totally talking to me today. I’m still practicing my copywriting so it’s more about my peeps and their experiences. I adore your emails because your writing really connects to me.

I agree with Bev’s comment. My blogging voice is clear, but whenever I promote a product or service, my authenticity dries up.

Hahahahaha! Obviously, you’re not alone… A lot of us tend to get our “serious voices” out for copy and forget that we’re not supposed to sound like robots. Have more fun with it. Don’t take it as seriously at first…you can always edit! 🙂
