A Favorite Resource: Creative Lettering

- March 5, 2013 | by April -

I noticedΒ Creative Lettering by Jenny Doh listed on Amazon at least over a month ago–probably longer–but it said that it wasn’t available for purchase yet. I waited. I checked back. I waited. I checked back. And, then I bought it as soon as it was released.

I’ve been looking for THIS book for years. It started when I began scrapbooking over eight years ago. Since that time, I’ve been searching for a really good hand-lettering resource. I don’t love my handwriting. When I take my time, it looks okay, but I’ve wanted more than okay, you know?

Now, I’m using this resource for my art journals and anything special with handwriting. Plus, it features one of my favorite artists, Jessica Swift. If you want a value-packed resource for hand-lettering, this book is a must.

It’s not only filled with how-to guidelines and techniques. It also includes “stories” from the contributors and is filled with beautiful pictures. If you’re an art journaler or mixed media artist, you need this on your bookshelf.

I feel the same way about my handwriting. I used to like it, but the more I type and the less I actually use my handwriting, the uglier it gets! I am a scrapbooker too! Die hard for like the last 12+ years and I know they preach about using your own handwriting, but I just don’t like it. Plus, it’s big, so it’s hard to fit a lot of journaling on a page unless I type it. AND…I am in LOVE with fonts!! So I love to search for new fonts online and use them on my pages.

I’ll definitely be checking this book out. And you may even see some of my scrapbook pages included on my new blog…coming soon!

Ooh, this looks really good. I’m not so great with writing either. I’ve bought a few hand lettering books and they just haven’t clicked with me and they’ve felt a bit ‘meh’. This one looks really good – Love Jenny Doh and Jessica Swift. Some of the images look a bit “Pam Garrison” too. Might have to check this one out – have been wanting to get some more art books to add to my collection.

I know what you mean about not clicking with them. This is the first one I’ve found that I really love.

PS – I’d love you to share more of your art books through the year – love seeing what art books other people gravitate to. Love the painted pages one, and now this one. Although, it may not be good for my budget – seeing all these art books if they aren’t already in my colleciton!

This looks like a really pretty book. I love different fonts and handwriting. I actually won a handwriting contest way back in 5th grade!

Oh, this looks amazing. Have been searching for handlettering books for a while … For some strange reason I have been playing around with lettering eversince I started to learn how to write. But I never really made anything of it … it was just “doodling” to me and I used it to decorate my folders when I was bored in school. πŸ™‚ Now I regret that I ever stopped doing it *laugh* and have been trying to get back into it and try out different styles and such. Thanks for sharing this book!!! Will go on my wishlist! πŸ™‚

It’s so crazy that we stop doing the things we loved as kids…I’ve done a lot of soul searching in the past couple years about what I used to enjoy and incorporating that stuff back into my life. It makes me soooooooo happy to spend time writing just for the sake of writing stories and that’s something I used to spend hours doing as a kid. πŸ™‚
