You might think that vegans and burgers aren’t two things that go well together, but they really, really do. There are bean burgers, mushroom burgers, veggie burgers, and tofu burgers…and probably more.
Nine times out of ten, when my husband and I crave a burger and fries, we whip up black bean burgers and heat up some delicious steak fries to go with them. We sometimes top the burgers with just a little mustard and ketchup–sometimes we get fancy and add a slice of tomato and maybe some lettuce and red onion. We’ll leave the toppings up to you, but here’s the spicy black bean burger recipe if you want to replicate one of our favorites.
Ingredients:
1 can of black beans
3/4 cup of panko bread crumbs
2 Ener-G eggs, premixed according to package directions
1 shallot, finely chopped
2 tablespoons of vegan worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon chipotle chili powder
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
2 tablespoons EVOO {extra virgin olive oil} for mixture and 3 tablespoons for the pan
Directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans until most beans are broken up but you can still tell it’s black beans.
2. Add everything except the 3 tablespoons of EVOO for the pan to the black beans and mix together.
3. Heat a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the three reserved tablespoons of EVOO.
4. Divide the mixture into four and with your hands, form burger-like patties.
5. Gently place each patty into the pan. Let cook for about seven minutes. Flip and let cook for about another seven minutes.
I LOVE black bean burgers! I get them when I go out to eat, but your homemade one looks really tasty. Thanks for the recipe.
I used to get them out, but once I went gluten-free, I couldn’t find anywhere that offered them gluten-free…complete bummer. But, we learned to make some really good ones at home. Hope you enjoy them, too!
