The Big Blogging Mistake You Don’t Want to Make

- April 17, 2013 | by April -

Let’s pretend that you’ve just spent an hour writing a blog post.

You re-read it three times to check for spelling and grammatical errors. You take photos and edit them just for this post. Or, you spend thirty minutes finding professional-quality images you can use. You quickly type in your title and hit publish.

You go get a manicure and when you return, you’re surprised that you don’t have any comments. You know this post is one of your best. You know it’s something your target market will love. But, no one seems to notice.

What’s the problem?

Well, it could be your title. If your blog post title doesn’t intrigue people to click and read, it doesn’t matter how great your content is and how beautiful your pictures are.

In order to get people to click on your post and read it, you have to grab their attention with your headline.

In today’s video, I’m giving you lots of examples of blog post titles that work well and the reasoning on why they work.

A very timely post! I’ve got a blog post scheduled for Friday and as I watched your video, I realized how boring my title is. Now I have time to punch it up before Friday.

Thanks, as always, for your Wednesday Wisdom!

I’ve been working on this a lot more since doing Blogging for Your Creative Business. I’m realizing how important the headline is. And also when you only have 140 characters on Twitter.

It’s hard to find a balance between a great headline and not over doing things that have been done 100 times before or sounding like a schmoozy salesperson trying to get you to buy something you dont want (like those late night shopping channels – but wait, there’s more!). I think my writing has improved so much since doing the course. I have a different awareness to my writing that I didn’t have before the course. Yay!

YES! You’ve got to make it count.

Hahahahahaha….I know what you mean. But, actually, a lot of those late night shopping channels work…I know you don’t want to sound like them, but it’s sad that those tactics don’t turn us all off. 🙂

I’ve always struggled with writing titles, whether it was for a college paper, a poem, or my artwork. So when it comes to the blog, I admit that I just use whatever comes to mind first, even if it might only make sense to me;) Thanks for these tips! I’m going to start paying more attention to my titles.

I think you’ll see a big difference when you spend more time on them. 🙂

Eep… OK, I admit it. My titles kinda suck. Thanks for this video, April. I like that you showed many different kinds of headlines and WHY they are engaging.

Oh, and I get annoyed with those “my life is super wonderful!” posts too. 🙂
