Embracing Your Uniquity

- June 14, 2013 | by April -

Balloon24a

My favorite time of day is when my husband gets home in the evening and we walk our dogs around our neighborhood.

I planned my wedding around a Virginia Tech football game. {Go Hokies!}

White pumpkins are my top choice of pumpkin.

I’d rather watch Burn Notice in my pajamas than go to a Broadway play.

I’ve watched The Little Mermaid at least 100 times. My mom tells me that I would rewind my favorite songs and sing them over and over. I feel really bad about that since I was kicked out of chorus in fifth grade because I sounded like a dying animal when trying to belt one out.

I’m allergic to peas. And green beans. And almonds. And gluten. That’s all.

I love to spend the weekends creating things: jewelry, new recipes, paintings, hand-sewn clothes.

I’m afraid of heights, and I detest slugs.

Peonies are my favorite flower. A creamy ranunculus comes in a close second.

I once decorated my entire apartment in pink and green. I grew out of that phase—thank goodness.

I get excited over little things like mint-colored nail polish, organic strawberries and polka-dot cupcake liners.

I could happily spend an entire day editing photos or writing. You’ll find me doing one of two on most.

I cry every time I hear the song Skinny Love by Birdy and I can’t help but break out the dance moves every time I hear Ice, Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice. {Yes, they are some sweet dance moves. Ask my husband.}

I was a cheerleader in high school. Oh yeah, I’ve got spirit. {My mom still has my HUGE megaphone in storage.} To my husband’s dismay, I no longer have the uniforms.

I dated too many bad boys. I married a good guy.

I’m addicted to books—of all kinds. I read every night before falling asleep. I listen to audiobooks when I walk my dogs alone mid-morning.

My favorite book of all time is…I can’t pick. Are you crazy? Addicts can’t have favorites. But these are some of my top loves: The Time Traveler’s Wife, Matilda, Nineteen Minutes {Jodi Picoult}, Divergent, Harry Potter, The Creative Habit, The War of Art, Gone Girl, The Guardian {Nicholas Sparks}

I squeal at spiders. Yep, like a five-year-old girl.

Brooklyn was not my kinda place to live. I’m not a city girl. Blacksburg, Virginia is where I’m meant to be.

These are some of the things that make me unique. Embracing each of these things makes me happier, more successful, and honestly, more interesting.

Be who you are. There’s only one of you in this world and we NEED what you have to offer the world.

For all we know, you get one life. How are you going to embrace what makes you unique to make yours a life worth living?

    Love this post April. Because we get to know more about you and because we have more in common than I realized. I’m hopeless with that Birdy song too – as well as quite a few others. And I regularly sing Ice Ice Baby (including the base line – Dom doh doh doh doh Dom Dom). Usually when I get ice out of the freezer. It’s one of the few songs my husband asks me not to sing because of the song, not because of my voice. Cause it’s usually because of my voice.

    I’ve added more me to my about pages and newsletters lately and it feels good to make public declarations on the stuff that’s VERY me. Like my un-natural obsession with my car including that I have a favourite gear (it’s 3rd). That I believe in good spoons and special cups. That I’m a square bear and I’m incredibly impatient. I think sharing this helps you connect with people so much more than just being a bland beige name. I think we should all do this more.

      Thanks Coral! 🙂

      Isn’t that song so sad?! But, I looooooooove it.

      Hahahahahahaha…my husband has to deal with my voice…and it’s not pretty.

      YAY!!!! Ha…a favorite gear. I’m impatient, too….it something I’ve tried to work on to no avail.

    Love this list! I also have Vanilla Ice on my 80’s playlist on my iPod along with other shame inducing songs such as Dazzey Duks, It Takes Two and Push It! My husband is a singer ( a really good one!) so I don’t sing when he’s around! LOL! Incidentally, I think my favorite gear is 4th…kind of a good all purpose gear for around town. 🙂

    Peonies are my favorite flower too! And I was a high school cheerleader back in the day. I’m a huge Disney fan, so I totally understand the need to rewind again and again and sing the songs at the top of my lungs. 🙂

    The ice machine here plays “Ice Ice Baby” when you get ice. My Dad actually tries to dance to it when he goes there…pretty funny! My song of shame is apparently the theme to Fresh Prince. He was laughing at me as I sang along to it while watching reruns the other day.

    Let’s see my uniquity..haha this could be interesting.

    -I feel like I’m a bit awkward, which frequently makes me act awkward when I probably wouldn’t have been awkward to start with. If that makes sense?
    -French fries give me hiccups. Every. Single. Time.
    -I don’t usually want chocolate. Unless I’m pregnant.
    -I can’t pick a favorite book. Or movie. Or song. Or TV show. I’m hopeless.
    -I want to know how to play over a dozen instruments. I currently know….none of them.
    -I want to know how to speak over a dozen languages. I currently know…one of them. (Isn’t this sad?)
    -I’m allergic to mango (sad!), and the sun (who knew?).
    -I’m a night owl & an insomniac…my husband jokes that I’m a vampire because I’m allergic to sun, and don’t sleep at night (I do, really!).

    Ok that’s me. lol
