I love color. Putting together new color combinations is like playing golf for my husband–I could do it for hours.
Since I started sharing color palettes that I’ve pulled from photos, I’ve gotten questions on exactly how I do it, so I’m going to take you through the steps in today’s video.
I’ll also share different ways you can use these color palettes for your business. Feel free to use the ones that I’ve published on Blacksburg Belle for your own inspiration.
I first learned how to make these color palettes from an Illustrator 102 class I took via Nicole’s Classes. I highly recommend this course if you want to learn lots of fun tips and tricks to using Illustrator.
Hi April, this was a great tutorial. I am really interested in learning how to use illustrator properly, I’d be interested to hear how you learnt how to use it. Were you self taught or did you do some sort of course?
I’ve been finding different little tutorials like yours online and giving them a go, which has been really helpful, but obviously illustrator is capable of doing so many things, I really feel like I am not using it to it’s full potential!
Hey Laura! You should check out the classes on nicolesclasses.com – there are a lot of illustrator courses and I’ve taken the Illustrator 102 class which was AWESOME. If you don’t know the basics, you should start with Illustrator 101. I hope that helps some!
Thats great, thanks April. I will definitely check that out 🙂
Hi April. I have a PC. Do you know of any free or inexpensive programs for Windows that can accomplish this same task?
Hey Diane! I don’t know of any free software that accomplishes the same task. That doesn’t mean that there isn’t one out there–I just don’t know of it. You can try out Adobe Illustrator for free for 30 days and they do offer a pretty reasonable monthly payment option. Or you could purchase the creative cloud option which is $49.99/month, but you get access to a ton of Adobe products {all the most recent edition} including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
Unfortunately, out of my price range, but I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.
hi Diane,
Try Inkscape. It is free and pretty darn good, a bit of a learning curve to use it though.
good luck.

Hi April
I think this might be my new 5.30am project!
I love your colour palettes and was wondering how you do them; now I know.
Oh and I love your Wednesday Wisdom videos.
