Smoothie Experiment: Week 1

- September 5, 2014 | by April -

This month I’ve challenged myself to drink a smoothie each day in order to see how it will impact my health.

Every smoothie is made from super healthy, organic ingredients and most include superfoods such as maqui powder, camu powder, acai powder, goji berries, chia seeds, and hemp seeds. And, I’m not adding any sugar, honey or other sweeteners to them.

Most of the smoothie recipes come from Superfood Smoothies by Julie Morris and a few are recipes that I’ve come up with because I know that I’ll love the taste.

Before the month began, I ordered $125 worth of superfoods. And, I started drinking smoothies every other day for a week before the beginning of September to get my body used to the superfoods. I didn’t want to flood my body with stuff it wasn’t used to because that could make me sick and do the opposite of what I’m hoping to accomplish from this experiment.

Some days, I recorded some video and others I took pictures. If you want daily updates, follow me on Instagram!

Day 1 (September 1st):

I had the raspberry peach smoothie from Superfood Smoothies and according to the book, it’s supposed to help with heart health and bone strength. The superfood in this one was chia seeds. It was extra tart but after the first few sips, it was easier on my palate. Overall, I enjoyed it and I’ll definitely make it again. I started out this month really hopeful.

Day 2:

I had a lot more energy than I normally do. I have no idea whether the superfood smoothies were starting to help or what.

I made the peaches and cream smoothie from Superfood Smoothies and that one specifically helps with immunity and heart health. The superfoods in it were chia seeds and goji berries. I had to choke this one down, not because it tasted bad but because it looked like vomit. I’m a visual eater and when something looks disgusting, I have a very hard time eating it. I only got about half of it down before I had to stop.

Day 3:

Because I was feeling super nauseous, I made up my own smoothie. I knew that I’d like it and I didn’t want to make something that would just increase my nausea. Ingredients: frozen strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, banana, cashew milk, maqui powder. It was delicious!

Day 4:

I fell asleep in the afternoon after my call with Bryan (my content producer) from creativeLIVE. The detailed outline for my courses is done and locked! Oh yeah! I had planned on having a smoothie that afternoon as a snack but I didn’t get up, so I didn’t have one this day. Sad.

Day 5:

Again, I had a lot more energy than I normally do which is really exciting to me. One of the medications that I’m taking has made me anemic so my energy level has plummeted in the past month. Maybe these superfoods are increasing my energy? I hope so.

I made up my own recipe again: frozen blueberries, frozen banana, coconut milk, coconut ice (it’s just frozen coconut water) and camu powder. The frozen banana added some extra creaminess. It was yummy. I’ll definitely be making that one again.

See ya back here next week for another update!

so I know you are getting blasted with health advice now, but…a friend was having drywall replaced at her home and her gluten intolerant son was getting really sick. Turns out the paste has gluten and they were dosing the poor kid every time they sanded.
Any construction going on at your place?

I love a blueberry smoothie with frozen banana, soy milk, a handful of frozen spinach and kale and a nice wallop of peanut butter. Sounds crazy but it’s SO good.

Ummmm…that sounds really good to me. I’ve hidden greens in smoothies for a while now. You can barely taste them! Thanks for the recipe!

I love this. I’m also trying to have a smoothie everyday. It makes me feel good… at least I’m getting some fruits and veggies every day. Plus they’re so good. Looking forward to keeping up with your progress.

I did a smoothie challenge last November, by Simple Green Smoothies. It was awesome. My smoothie fav for this week is 2 cups Almond milk, 2 cups baby spinach (or to desired), 2 cups frozen strawberry, 1 banana, and 1 tablespoon grated ginger. I give it to my sons, with less spinach. The challenge really helped me change my eating habits, and I don’t have any major issues with health, but I noticed quite a change just adding this habit to my mornings. Cheers to you April, I hope it makes a difference for the better!

Ohhhh…I haven’t thought about adding ginger. That’s interesting! Thanks for sharing your favorite smoothie recipe for the time being. Might be have to try it out while replacing the almond milk with cashew milk since I’m allergic.

What else are you eating throughout the day? I’m just curious. Glad to hear that you are having increased energy! That’s awesome and something I’d love to have also!

I’m vegan so I eat mostly fruits and vegetables with some beans, non-gluten grains like quinoa and rice, nuts (other than almonds), tofu, etc. For example, this is a typical day: breakfast: quinoa and oats oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts and a sprinkle of cinnamon, lunch: half a veggie sandwich on gluten-free bread and carrot sticks with hummus, dinner: veggie stir-fry, roasted potatoes and wild rice.

The problem is that I’ve only been eating one or two meals a day due to nausea so I thought adding in a smoothie packed with awesome nutrients would help. It’s actually made me more hungry during the day so I’m back to eating at least two meals a day plus the smoothie!

I’m vegetarian and really considering going to a vegan diet. Your whole smoothie thing is sounding great, and I may just give it a whirl!

I hope that you continue to feel healthier and less nauseous in the days to come.

I’m so proud of the progress you’ve made already April.
I admit I could probably benefit a lot from following your example but at the same time I have so much on my plate these last few weeks before the wedding day that I don;t want to add anything more.
I will be watching your journey and results in hopes of adding more smoothies to my diet as we head into the colder weather (and cold/flu season)

I generally have a smoothie every day — the boyfriend makes them in the morning. They are my morning meal on the way to work. We’ve never considered adding superfoods though. So, that’s something I’ll have to experiment with!

Looking forward to your next update!

Nice boyfriend! Score! You should definitely think about adding a little superfood powder…I think it’s definitely impacted my energy level. Start with something that you can’t really taste like maca powder or maqui powder–both don’t affect the taste from what I can tell. Maybe they add a little tartness?

This has nothing to do with smoothies but… Are you wearing the Midnight Owl dress in the video?? I’m totally obsessed with Black Milk, it’s not even rational any more, so anyone who wears it is immediately regarded as soul mate. <3

    Keep it up!

Yeah, but seeing it in the blender would ruin it for me if it doesn’t look nice. I’m such a visual eater that I have a really hard time when something looks disgusting. Wish I wasn’t like that!
