Raise your hand if you don’t know the definition of target market.
Raise it high. No need for shyness. We’re all friends here and I don’t know about you but target market wasn’t one of the phrases my parents taught me when I was trying to grasp the English language.
If you’re in the midst of starting a business or learning about marketing, it’s important to take a few minutes to learn the basics about what a target market is and how it can impact your business success. I tried to make it easy on you with this 5-minute video:
I hope that clears some things up for you.
Now that you understand the basics, you need to apply it to your business. Here’s a free worksheet you can download to get you started.
I’ve included some creative ways to think about your target market and ideal customer in that worksheet. It’ll get you thinking in new directions.
Still have questions? Leave them in the comments below and I’ll try to my best to answer or include them in an upcoming blog post.
Great info, April! I appreciate the worksheet too. Today I got out your terrific workbook – Create Digital Products that Sell While You Sleep from your CreativeLive class. Oh my goodness, that class was amazing! I will keep my target market in mind as I think up digital products. I’m looking forward to finally getting going this year. Thanks for sharing your business savvy. It’s always fun listening to you!
Thank you for the worksheet April! It was great to see you on video again!
Cuuuuuute sweater, April! 🙂 And great video. Glad to see you back on video, it makes me feel like you’re right here reminding me of all the important things I sometimes forget.
Thank you so much for the worksheet. I’m still going through your digital products course on Creative Live, there is so much useful information!
Thanks for the video April! I’ve created my customer avatar previously, but I think I need to refresh my memory on who she is exactly, and also maybe look at a couple of my (very few) readers to see what I can find out. Thanks for the reminder, this is very helpful! And I love the worksheet! Why are worksheets so fun to fill out? 🙂
Love the video!!! Super nice background, BTW. I’m kind of scoping out backgrounds in videos since I’m planning on getting started with mine this summer. EEKK!!! But I have learned that my target market LOVES video. In particular, tutorials and video podcasts. So I need to include those in my marketing plan. The additional effort to reach out to them and to be on platforms they like and already use will really help me to grow my following. Plus the more I think about the kinds of things I can do, the more excited I get about doing it. But first, I need to fix up my background. Thanks for the inspiration. (PS: I love your hair and makeup in this, too.)
LOVE THIS! I also loved your e-book. You are so right about your target market wanting a guide and a check list format. So helpful because a lot of creatives/makers are thinking on many platforms simultaneously so the do this then do that is super helpful. Love your stuff!
LOVE!
I’m a huge fan of looking at real people too – rather than imagining an avatar. It feels good to know they are truly out there & a part of the conversation.
Thanks, friend! You are always so helpful 🙂

April thanks so much for this video girl!
I’ve been working on honing in on my target market, the last few weeks especially, and think I’ve got some more work to do cull it down some more so I’m more specific. I never really ever understood why we have to be so specific until you mentioned while explaining about your ebook that that’s how we talk to them…through our content and marketing. . Well duh! on my part, lol.
Thanks April. I’m definitely trying to spread myself too thin, trying to be all things to all people. I know I need to target a defined group for my own sanity if nothing else! As I’m a retailer as well as a maker, it also helps define what I should stock, or not bother with.
Thank you, April! Reinforcing the importance of my Ideal Customer is always good and very much appreciated. I love your videos … Keep ’em coming!
Very good. You gave me ideas and helped me realize name of business needs to include words that speak to customers in target market.
Thank you April, I really appreciate how succinct you are and the clarity you bring to these topics!
Thanks, Chica! Great to see you on video again! And a nice worksheet…love. 🙂
What a great breakdown thanks so much…I am realizing that I need to concentrate on my target market wayyyyy more than I have been but in realizing that I was instantly feeling rather lost in not knowing 100% what that meant exactly. Can’t wait for more videos, thanks again.
