How to REALLY Figure Out How You’re Different than Your Competitors

- August 16, 2017 | by April -

I work with a lot of creatives who shrug and cringe when asked how they’re different from their competition. They mumble something about a general strength like being a good listener or a generic style aspect of their brand like using bright colors.

Many can’t answer this question because they haven’t developed their own style.

And then, they torment themselves for not having their own style, as if they should magically know what the hell it is.

On the other side of the coin, I also chat with way too many creatives who want to start an online business but haven’t yet because of one main objection.

That objection goes something like, “But there are already 19,473,294 people doing the thing I want to do. How will I stand out? Why will anyone care what I have to say?”

I want to clear this up for you today. In today’s video, I tell you how to figure what makes you different and how to develop your own style. Click that play button below to hear my thoughts:

I’m not going to summarize what I said in the video above, because I’m not going to give you an easy out. Either you watch it or you don’t. (Yep…I’m feeling quite sassy today.)

I hope you take to heart the message from today’s video.

P.S. No matter where you are in your business, you have something of value to offer. If you don’t know what to share on social media, share the truth. Show what you’re working on. Talk about the wins and losses. Show what’s happening right now. Stop faking it until you make it and show your followers what your work and life really looks like.

I simply love how honest this video is!
It takes time. It takes so many mistakes. It takes so many failures.
    It takes DOING!

    Hi April;
Thank you for an excellent video about finding your style of business. This message was spot on for me. I appreciate you taking the time to let us know that we need to be patient and look at the lens of experimenting and playing full out of my style.

You’re so welcome! I know what it’s like being in that beginning place and wanting it all to come together right away and it just doesn’t happen like that. I wish I would’ve been given this same advice. 🙂

This is so exactly what I needed to hear today. I just started filming videos and as much as I would love to have my style figured out, I know you’re right. I just have to do the work and make video after video after video to figure it out.

I can’t wait to look back after a year and see how far I came!

Oh my gosh…you will look back at your first videos and laugh. That’s the way it should be. You’ll see so much growth and so will the people who stick with you through that year. They will love following you and watching you grow.

I feel like half of this was directed at me.

Yep…you’re exactly right! When I started my newest business a few years ago, I didn’t really know what it would look like, what my style would be…and I kept telling myself that I’d been down that road before, and IF you do the work, eventually YOUR style will shine…and it has! There’s nothing quite like being consistent, being creative consistently, that allows your personal style to evolve…I don’t think it happens overnight…and it does take patience AND sometimes it takes a lot of fails but it happens! And it will never happen if you’re just copying someone else’s style either! Now, just to get all that marketing, etc. nailed (by ACTIVELY participating in Sunday Society of course!)…thanks April, for ALL you do!!!

Great pep talk, April! I constantly have to remind myself that clarity comes from action and not thought. There is no way to “think” yourself to where you want to go. You’ve got to take the steps to get there.
