What Color is Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent?

With a name like “Sea Serpent,” you can’t help but think about the deep dark of the ocean and the creatures that lurk there.

For me, it conjures up images of the mythical sea serpent known as the Leviathan from Norse lore. Take a look at the image I have found below.

The LRV of Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent

If you are not all that versed in the world of paint, you might not have heard of the term LRV before. Don’t worry, because it’s actually quite simple! LRV stands for light reflective value and helps us to know how much light a color reflects. The traditional scale goes from 0, reflecting no light at all, so black, to 100, where you find white with the highest reflective value.

It’s worth noting though that no paint color is truly black or pure white, as there is always a level of pigment in the manufacturing process. This means that when looking at paint, the darkest color you can get comes in at 2.4, and the brightest at 94.

The LRV of Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent is 7. This means it is on the dark end of the scale, however, don’t let this put you off using this color as it can be truly magic on the right paintbrush!

Undertones of Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent

Even though it is a dark color, you can still pick out a clear undertone in Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent SW 7615, and that is gray.

Although this might sound boring, this undertone helps to give Sea Serpent more versatility, and it’s one of the reasons why Sherwin Williams has put this paint color in their neutrals collection.

Take a look at this picture I have found, you can really see the gray notes coming through!

Can Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent End Up Being Too Dark?

With an LRV of 7, Sea Serpent by Sherwin Williams is definitely not a light and bright color by any means. So, can it end up being too dark and gloomy for some rooms?

As much as I love this color, yes, if rooms lean on the darker side and see less natural light, Sherwin Williams can end up being a little too dark for the space. This paint color definitely likes a well-lit room, so if you have a North-facing room that you are thinking of using Sea Serpent in as a main color, you might want to reconsider.

However, there are some caveats to this and ways you can use Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent in these darker rooms, even if it isn’t directly painted onto the walls.

For example, it could be used on furniture as a statement, or even used as a ceiling color in order to add depth and height to a room. For an example of how Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent could be used in a dark room, take a look at the inspiration picture I have found below.

Here it’s been used as the interior to a cabinet, helping to give it depth and to showcase whatever is placed inside. Although this is a pretty bright and well-lit room, this technique still works in a darker space.

Alternatively, if you want to ramp up the drama, don’t be afraid to use Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent in a dark room. For example in this small bathroom with no windows, it really has a showstopping appeal!

Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent vs Other Paint Colors

Sea Serpent vs Hale Navy

Sea Serpent is a great color from the Sherwin Williams paint catalog, while Hale Navy is a very similar shade from Benjamin Moore. The main differences lie in the LRVs, with Hale Navy sitting just marginally lighter with an LRV of 8.3 compared to Sea Serpent’s 7.

But, it is easier to see the green undertone of Hale Navy as well as the gray it has in it, while any green notes are a little harder to spot in Sea Serpent as opposed to the gray.

Sherwin Williams Sea Serpent Benjamin Moore Equivalent

You might be in love with the paint color Sea Serpent from Sherwin Williams, but just wish it was by Benjamin Moore instead. If this is the case, then I’ve gone ahead and found the best alternative from the Benjamin Moore catalog for you!

The Benjamin Moore equivalent to Sea Serpent is a color called Blue Note. This is very similar to Sea Serpent, but it’s worth noting it is 2 points lighter on the LRV scale, and the navy color is considered more of an undertone rather than the main hue.

However, if Blue Note doesn’t float your boat, then Hale Navy which I have discussed above also makes for a fantastic alternative from this paint manufacturer.
