Pinterest, Ethics, and Dealing with Negativity with Jessika Hepburn

- March 26, 2012 | by April -

What are the values that you’ve built your business on?

Do you consider those values before responding to negativity, before producing a new product line, or before writing a blog post?

Values and ethics aren’t the sexiest thing to talk about when it comes to business, but it’s an important piece that you don’t want to ignore. That’s why I’m super excited to share this interview with Jessika Hepburn from Oh My! Handmade Goodness with you.

Some highlights from this interview with Jessika Hepburn include:

  • Our thoughts on Pinterest {We filmed this before Pinterest made changes to their terms of use. Please keep this in mind while watching.}
  • Why all marketing isn’t always good marketing
  • What to do when people DON’T love what you’re making, producing, or blogging
  • Why Jessika wouldn’t put advertising for Huggies on Oh My! Handmade Goodness
  • The biggest controversy that has been coming up again and again
  • How to disagree respectfully

Here’s where you can find the post and downloadable mentioned in this interview: Simple Ethics for a Complicated World.

Quick Reminder: Six Weeks to a More Passion-Filled and Profitable Business increases in price by $100 tonight at 9pm EST. If you want in, check out the details here.

For the most of us, respect and work ethic are so natural that we forget to think about it.
Until the unexpected happens 🙂 Really great interview and guidelines. Thank you!

Thank you so much for inviting me here to chat with you April! I loved the opportunity to connect with you in real time and get over my virtual shyness on a topic I care so deeply about. These conversations about ethics are something I never get tired of and I look forward to hearing your readers ideas/thoughts on this.

I am still reading & re-reading Pinterest’s new terms of service and researching the responses to it that are starting to crop up. I will definitely be reading the fine print + asking around before I start pinning!

PS: Next time I’m investing in a padded room for the kids, or a babysitter, one or the other;) Thank you for your gracious patience with my juggling act!

Thanks for making time to have this discussion!

I’m still reading and re-reading Pinterest’s new terms of service, too!

P.S. Your kids are sooooo adorable. But, wouldn’t a padded room be convenient?!?! 🙂

This was a great video. I always know that anyone April thinks is worth listening to will be awesome, and since I’ve only recently discovered OMHG, this was such a great introduction to Jessika!

I often struggle to understand why people have such issues with copying. You both inspired me to delve a little deeper into the issue, and question how I would feel if I knew someone had copied my stuff. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Great tips offered in regards to dealing with negativity or conflict. I think it applies for our businesses and lives in general.

I think April brought up a great point about miscommunication – not realizing the weight our actions or misinterpreting what others mean. We definitely need to educate!

About Pinterest, there have been changes in their policy and there have been responses from them in regards to the uproar of their policies – but of course they can’t respond to every single person or change their legal documentation on the fly. I think it’s all new territory that simply needs to be figured out, because technology allows us to do things we never thought were possible or ever considered before.

It makes me think a bit about Facebook as well. Many people opted out of Facebook because of their policies… any thoughts on that versus Pinterest? With the amount of people using these platforms, I doubt they will be going away…

Hey Linda! I did note that there have been changes in their policies. We recorded this interview before they made those changes public. And, I definitely agree that there are going to be some growing pains.

I like both Facebook and Pinterest. I just suggest that as a user you should look at the terms of service and decide if it’s right for you. I’m with ya…I don’t think they’ll be going away, either.

I am much older than the two of you, and frequently am appalled at behaviors exhibited in today’s world, Therefore, I find it totally refreshing to hear young women talk about business and personal ethics, respect, kindness and compassion. We are bombarded by the media with so many negative things. Your conversation gives me hope for the future and the world my grandson will have to navigate long after I am gone.

Keep it up, ladies! You are terrific.

I have no idea how I missed this awesome video . You two are awesome and great women to know. I love the idea of creating ethics for a small biz.
I totally agree that at times people who pin something as a DIY are completely oblivious to the fact that someone put in a lot of time and effort into it. Approaching them in a respectful manner and talking it out might have a positive effect rather than calling out on social media . I have seen way too many dramas online where a situation couldve been resolved in a much more delicate and respectful manner.

Thanks for discussing this subject and it goes to prove that love triumphs over hate 🙂

      Thanks Lakshmi! You’re awesome, too!

It can be hard to take a step back and look at things objectively when you feel disrespected, but I think it’s incredibly important to do.
